My boyfriend was actually the first to inform me of Mac's planned release of the collection many months ago, and to be quite honest it had left my mind until earlier this month when I saw Mac's twitter post announcing the release in America on February 26th online and March 5th in stores. It contained an image of the collection and it's safe to say that since that moment, I was hooked.
The items that I got in the collection are:
- Royal Ball Lipstick (Lustre finish)
- Free As A Butterfly Lipstick (Lustre finish)
- Happily Ever After Lipglass
- Pretty It Up Pigment
- Coupe D' Chic Iridescent Powder
The whole collection:
First Impressions
My first impression was simply how beautiful the packaging was. All the products came in a periwinkle blue box with a gold trim. The inside of the boxes were also entirely gold. I am such a packaging hoarder but this packaging is so beautiful that I am actually considering framing it and keeping it on display...taking sad to a whole new level right? The packaging of the actual makeup is equally as beautiful, if not beautifuller - not fuller, it doesn't look fuller, more beautiful! (little frozen reference for those bloggers who know it word for word like myself). Back onto the packaging...the periwinkle blue this time has a purple iridescence about it and still follows with the gold trim on some products. There were many murmurs about this packaging looking 'cheap' and 'childlike' but this is not the case - in real life it's sleek and simply gorgeous.
Reviews
So I'm gonna start with the iridescent powder in Coupe D' Chic. Personally this product has the nicest packaging out of them all, and if I am being completely honest, the packaging may have been the only reason I got this product. After hearing some bad reviews, I was very cautious about buying this but decided to give it a go. Coupe D' Chic is an incredibly glittery, pinky, peach powder. Warning!!!!! THIS PRODUCT DOES NOT SWATCH WELL AT ALL!!!! It's true. When swatching this product very little shows up and it looks almost translucent with a few glitter particles. But when applying this to your face it could not be more different. I would wear this over the top of a blush for a more heavy makeup look, or as a blush itself for a more natural look. Iridescent is the only word I can use to describe this (which is good because it is an iridescent powder I guess). I feel that it is not until you step back from your mirror and look at your cheeks before you realise how pretty this powder really is. It is a thumbs up from me with a rating of 5 stars.
Next is the 'pretty it up' pigment pot. I have been very cautious about using this as pigments are not something I have used a lot before. This pigment reminds me of a gold/bronze/olive coloured thick glitter. I would advise to apply first before any makeup as fallout is guaranteed. Be sure to use a tacky primer (i've heard the studio eye gloss from this range is extremely tacky and would work well as a base) to make sure the product sticks to your eye. I sprayed my eye-shadow brush with Macs 'fix+' before applying the pigment, just to help it stick better, but if you don't have fix+, tap water would do fine. 'Pretty it up' blends well and works well as a crease colour. I do love the colour however find pigments messy and will have to spend some time getting used to them before I can count this product as a holy grail for me, I give it a 3 and a half star rating purely down to the messiness that is to be expected from loose pigments.
Moving onto the items I know you all want to hear about...lip products. Starting with 'Royal Ball'. This is a lustre finish and reminds me of the exact colour the cartoon Cinderella wore on her lips throughout. It's a fleshy pink colour and is extremely pretty. Like all Mac lipsticks, I find that this product doesn't last extremely long on my lip and does settle into my lines, and since it is a lustre finish even more so. I find myself reapplying after an hour and a half. This product is extremely natural and leaves for a shimmery pink finish which is very Cinderella! My advice would be to use a lip liner similar to your skin tone before if you are wanting the colour of this lipstick to really 'pop'. I give this product 4 stars and would recommend it.
Now 'Free As A Butterfly'. This was my favourite lipstick from photos, and probably still is after trying both in real life. I feel like this lipstick can be worn with a natural every day look or it could be worn on a night time with a sultry smoky eye. Therefore this would be the perfect lipstick to take for a day to night look. It also has a lustre finish and therefore lasts the same amount of time as Royal Ball. It is a nude, peachy, beige colour and is extremely pretty. Again with this I would advise to use a skin coloured lip liner underneath to really make the colour pop. I give this product 4 stars.
Finally is the 'Happily Ever After' lipglass. To be honest I am not one for lip glosses...or 'lipglasses' as Mac like to call it. But after seeing this product I had to try it. I only bought one as I was told they are both very similar in this collection. 'Happily Ever After' is a pinky champagne colour with iridescent blue and pink glitter. The best thing about this lipglass is that you can't feel the glitter when it is on your lips. You know the gritty feeling that you sometimes get with glitter lipglosses? Well this does not have it. It's completely smooth and for that I love it! I love the iridescent finish it has on my lips and it pairs nicely with both the lipsticks from this collection. It is a little tacky, however I love this product so I can see past that minor setback. Therefore I rate this product 5 stars and would recommend it highly.
Swatches
From top to bottom: Free As A Butterfly, Royal Ball, Happily Ever After.
From top to bottom: Pretty It Up, Coupe D' Chic. These products do not swatch well at all, but on the face/eyes they look so much prettier!!
To sum up, I LOVE this collection!! I would highly recommend it to anybody although due to its pale colours I think it would show up best on fair skinned people. There has been some complaints about it not showing up on WOC, however putting the collection into context it is designed to fit Cinderella who is extremely pale. I hope this review was helpful, thank you for reading!
